The Soggy Dollar Bar is at White Bay on Jost Van Dyke, an island that belongs to the British Virgin Islands. A volcanic island of approximately 8 square miles, Jost lies about 5 miles northwest of Tortola, 7 miles northeast of St. Thomas, and 5 miles north of St. John. Winter temperatures here range between 75 and 85 degrees, with summer temperatures in the 80-90 degree range (and occasionally reaching into the lower 90s). Showers do occur, but they rarely last more than 10 minutes. The prevailing easterly tradewinds provide great sailing, surfing and natural air-conditioning. The island of Jost Van Dyke has about 222 permanent residents, most of whom live in Great Harbour, and only 25 year-round residents live in White Bay. Up until March of 1996, the only way to get to White Bay was by water taxi or swim, hence the dollars in your pocket became wet and soggy. Perhaps it's the setting of White Bay, the thirst from the swim, the perfect blend… whatever was the reason for creating the drink Painkiller at the Soggy Dollar, endeavor a blend of premium dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple and orange juice (proportions are secret), topped with fresh grated Grenadian nutmeg. This drink makes the swim (no dock/jetty) to the Soggy Dollar Bar worth the effort. For an explanation on the ring game click the link below. less
